A Day at Glodwick in Year 2
Come and take a look at a typical day in Year 2 at Glodwick Infant and Nursery School. Below you will see how a typical day in Year 2 is planned to get the most out of the learning time in school and provide a clear routine for our children so they always know what comes next.
If you have any questions please speak to your child's class teacher or the office.
Morning Registration
The School gates open at 8:50am and the children are welcomed by their class teacher at the doors.
The children change their home reading book and then take part in a group carpet activity with a focus on their learning from that week.
The class teacher takes the register and then talks through the day using the visual time table.
Phonics
After morning registration the children take part in a whole class phonics session where previous phonics learning will be recapped and a new sound taught. For the children who no longer need phonics sessions this time is used to recap and introduce Spelling, punctuation and Grammar rules to the children.
This is then refered to through the day to remind children to use their phonics in all aspects of their learning.
Literacy
This children will then take part in a focused carpet session, exploring their focus book of the term and new learning.
They will then work with the class teacher and teaching assistant to apply their phonics skills and their new learning to their writing.
Playtime
The children will join the teaching assistant outside where they can play with their friends in their own class or in the other Year 2 classes.
The children can also explore the sensory garden independently including bird watching, hunting for minibeasts or even just enjoying the beautiful flowers and plants.
Number Facts
The children then take part in a focused group with either the class teacher or teaching assistant on specific number fact knowledge relating to their learning, these sessions are designed to enable children to access facts about number quickly to help their fluency in problem solving and maths in general.
Maths
Children will then work together in a focused carpet session recalling their previous learning and linking this to their new learning focus. The children will then have the opportunity to problem solve and use their learning to solve a problem together with a focus on being able to explain their reasons, whether it is correct or not.
The children will then work with either the class teacher or the teaching assistant in their maths books to record their findings.
Lunchtime
The children enjoy a playtime outside with the classroom teaching assistant and mid day supervisors who encourage the children to join group and sports games together before they make their way into our dinning hall to choose their lunch. There are lots of healthy choices every day to choose from including a salad bar. The children then have 30 minutes to eat before returning to the classroom.
Afternoon Registration
After lunch the children then will take part in afternoon registration where the class teacher takes the register and then explains the afternoon in detail using the visual timetable.
This is also the perfect time to practise our mindfulness skills and we develop these by taking part in discussions and meditation.
Foundation Subject Learning
In the afternoon we have a focus on foundation subjects such as music, computing, art and design etc and each afternoon the children will learn about one of these subjects, revisiting learning they have already seen, before being introduced to something new to help make those links.
The children will then take part in a focused session with the class teacher and teaching assistant to embed this learning and work at applying their new skills/knowledge.
Home Time
The children will get their things ready for hometime and parents are welcomed into the building to collect their child from their class to give parents the opportunity to speak to the class teacher if they wish too.
School closes at 3.00pm.
Courtyard and Shelter
We use the courtyard and shelter throughout the day for sports activites and games.
Inside the sheltered area there we have den building resources and a quiet reading space.
"I like using the quiet reading area in the shelter with my friends, it is really nice when you don't want to play loud games."
Library
Our Library is a small quiet space where children can read and learn in small groups.
The children have a designated slot once a week to visit the Year 2 Library and choose a book to take home and return the book from the previous week.
"I love the Library because there are so many books to read and every week we can pick one to read at home."
Playground
Our playground is shared throughout the day by Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children.
"I love learning new games to play with the teachers and my friends, every week we have something new to try."
Playground
Our playground is shared throughout the day by Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children and have designated times to use them for playtimes and outdoor learning such as minibeast hunts and tree identification and weather permitting, outdoor P.E. Lessons.
Sensory Garden
The Sensory Garden began to be developed by children from Glodwick Infant and Nursery School in 2018 for the future children of Glodwick to enjoy.
The Sensory Garden has a mixture of plants and flowers for the children to explore. They have been carefully picked to encourage the children to explore the 5 senses and get hands on experience with Nature and wildlife.
The Sensory garden is always improving with the help of Glodwick Children and Mr Hilton.
Improvements to the garden is often a focus for the School councillors.
